International law firm Shearman & Sterling has hired Florian Ziegler, financial partner of White & Case, in Germany, marking the firm’s fifth lateral hire in continental Europe this year.
Ziegler brings experience in a wide range of domestic and cross-border debt transactions and specializes in general business financing. He has experience in project finance as well as in restructuring and advises banks and other ﬁnancial institutions, private investors and companies incorporated under German law.
“Our financial practice continues to grow rapidly, and the hiring of Florian underscores our ambition to continue to expand and grow our global capabilities in this area,” said David Beveridge, senior partner at Shearman & Sterling.
Ziegler was a partner at White & Case in Frankfurt for the past six years, and before that an attorney at Allen & Overy for almost a decade.
White & Case could not immediately be reached for comment on his departure.
Ziegler will split his time between the Frankfurt and Munich offices. The company opened its Frankfurt office in 1991, and opened its Munich office in January 2021. Toffice hat officially opened its doors last weekdue to the coronavirus pandemic.
Florian Harder, head of the firm’s German offices, called Ziegler’s appointment an important part of Shearman’s strategy to grow and strengthen its financial offering in Germany.
“His expertise in leveraged and acquisition finance deepens the range of services we can offer our international and domestic clients, and he will work closely with our existing team to continue to drive the practice forward,” a- he declared.
When Shearman opened the Munich office in 2021, he brought in partners Florian Harder and Jann Jetter. Ziegler’s hire is the firm’s fifth lateral hire in continental Europe this year, following the arrival of partners Xavier Norlain, Jeremy Scemama, Maud Manon and Matthieu Lampel in Paris. Together, they significantly expand the company’s European capabilities in mergers and acquisitions, private equity and financing, the company said.
Shearman has also recently expanded into London, bringing on Hogan Lovells’ M&A partner Maegen Morrison in February this year.
But Shearman also lost people in Europe. Earlier this year, Senior Partner, Benjamin Marché has joined Squire Patton Boggs as a Financial Services Partner.
White & Case also recently lost another partner in Brussels, when longtime partner Alexandra Rogers left for Norton Rose Fulbright.
